two Florida natives arrive at the Sky Harbor airport in the late July heat. What could possibly follow? A whole week of playing tourist gave these friends of mine the opportunity to explore Red Rock Country, endless breweries and eateries, shopping at Fashion Square, and finally (my favorite of them all) Saguaro Lake.
A phone call with Caroline a month ago solidified her plans to stay with my husband and I out in the East Valley. On one condition, I told her- you have to do a photoshoot with me.
"OMG I would love that!!!!"
on a nice cool 110 degree evening, we ventured to Saguaro to capture Caroline and Carson's love story...
it is more common than not for the guys to feel a little shy. Most often I hear the words
"I don't know what to do"
or
"I'm just uncomfortable getting my picture taken"
or
"I just feel awkward"
fear not!
I know those feelings oh so well. I am that when it is my turn in front of the lens. So what do we do?
A few things:
1) When we arrive I go through exactly what to expect. This takes the unknown out, and hopefully gives clear expectations to our time together
2) I like to start with a "burner" prompt just to get warmed up. Something like "walk away from me holding hands, maybe twirling her along the way"
As you go, you'll usually talk, take in the surroundings, and settle in as you quickly discover: we are just hanging out, I just happen to have a camera. See the above for some pictures from our 'burner" prompt :)
a short walk up the Butcher Jones trail, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the lake. while the beach is usually packed with people launching paddle boards, families grilling, and maybe one or two other photographers, the trail is quiet, secluded, and offers, in my opinion, the best views of all.
evidence. the tattoo I had captured 5 years ago on a hand holding a graduation cap. now holding the hand of her future husband...such a beautiful unfolding of God's story.
